Activity: AI Art Studio
Introduction
Welcome to the AI Art Studio, where pixels meet playfulness and creativity. In this studio, the only supplies you need are your imagination and an AI tool. So get ready to unleash your inner artist to craft a creative masterpiece with a little bit of help from your AI art apprentice.
For inspiration, check out a 60 second video on how AI helped New York Times Cooking's Priya Krishna plan her Thanksgiving dinner.
What You'll Need
- Computer/Laptop Access: One device per person or one device per group.
- AI Tool Access: For this activity, we recommend Dall-E, Bing Image Creator, and Craiyon.
What You'll Do
1. Get Started (5 minutes)
Ideate: What are some creative works you've always wished you could create — an epic poem about your love of cheese? A heavy metal banger in honor of your co-workers? A Picasso-like painting of your dog? In this art studio the sky’s the limit. So cast aside any self-doubt, and embrace the joy of realizing your artistic ambition!
Choose: Select the medium in which you want to create (e.g., a song, a poem, an image, or something else) and the topic for your creation. Choose if you would like to create together as a group, in pairs, or individually and then share your creations.
2. Plan (2-5 minutes)
Decide on a few key components of your creation — the style, the audience, the length (if applicable), the tone, maybe even a color palette. For example, a poem about AI in the style of Dr. Seuss, or a portrait of a squirrel dressed in a steampunk-inspired exoskeleton painted in sepia tones, or a graffiti-style logo for your AI Day group.
AI Tip: Ask AI for examples of inspiring creators in your medium of choice
3. Explore (15 minutes)
Prompt AI with your initial creative request. Be as specific as possible with your prompt, providing whatever guidance and details you can.
Review your “first draft.” What do you like, not like? What more can your AI apprentice do to help? Prompt AI further to get the masterpiece you seek to create!
Keep refining and revising until you think your masterpiece is ready (or at least ready enough — we all know the best artists are rarely ever satisfied!).
4. Reflect and Share (5 minutes)
Share your masterpiece with your group! As you share, reflect on surprises, aha moments and challenges, and how this exercise could help you in your own work.Tips & Suggestions
- Be as creative as you can!
- Prompting for a certain style can be successful, but often specific references can be more useful in yielding the results you want.
- Rather than asking for sweeping revisions, focus on prompting for specific changes to smaller components or sections of a piece.
