Activity: Creative Clash:
AI vs. Human Editors
It’s time for a match-up between AI and a colleague!
Introduction
Welcome to the Creative Clash: AI vs Human Editors challenge. In this engaging and hopefully eye-opening writing challenge, you'll team up to explore the unique strengths of both AI and human editors, and how AI (artificial intelligence) works best with HI (human intelligence).
What You'll Need
- A partner
- Computer/Laptop Access: One device per person or one device per group.
- AI Tool Access: For this activity, we recommend ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, Pi, and Bard.
What You'll Do
1. Get Started (5 minutes)
First, you’ll need a piece of writing. Here are some options:
- Grab a piece of (non-confidential) writing you already have — anything from a short paragraph to a 1-2 page document.
- Quickly write something — maybe a reflection about your AI Day experience.
- Ask AI to generate the text for you — you can ask for a draft of a work-related email, a creative story, or a blog post about a passion topic!
2. Plan (2-5 minutes)
Read over the writing and decide on what type of revision and editing support you want. This could include advice on better organizing your piece, spicing up your content, altering the style and tone, fixing grammar issues, or specific pointers, like making language more direct and impactful.
3. Explore (15 minutes)
- Share with your partner what kind of revision help you want.
- Swap writing pieces with your partner.
- Revise each other's writing, keeping in mind the specific revision requests.
- Share your revisions, and talk with each other about your thoughts.
- Now repeat this process, but with an AI partner rather than a human.
- Go back to your original writing piece, and ask AI to revise it with the same “prompts” you gave your partner.
4. Reflect and Share (5 minutes)
Compare and talk about your two different revised versions. What differences do you notice? Which version do you prefer? If you had to choose one of the revised versions to use as a final copy, which would you choose, and why?And of course, share surprises, aha moments and challenges, and how your learnings and realizations could help you in your own work.
Tips & Suggestions
- Experiment and take risks: Don't be afraid to make bold changes or try new approaches during the process, whether you're the editor or the prompter.
- Be as specific as possible with your revision requests and needs, although be prepared to build upon unexpected results.
- Do your best to revise according to your partner’s requests and needs.
