Activity: Tackle a Dreaded Task

Can AI help you with a task you’ve been avoiding?

Introduction

Welcome to the ultimate task-tackling adventure where you and AI join forces to conquer the to-dos you might not love (or downright hate). AI might not be able to help you with cleaning the bathroom or reorganizing your sock drawer… yet. But it can help with some of the tedious or time-consuming tasks that take us away from the more engaging — and often more pressing — aspects of our work.

1. Get Started (5 minutes)

Ideate: What’s a task you’ve recently or frequently put off doing — sorting emails, creating schedules, summarizing a document?

AI Tip: Ask AI for a list of common tedious work-related tasks.

Choose: Choose the task you want to use an AI application for, and decide if you would like to do this activity together as a group, or work individually.

2. Plan (2-5 minutes)

Gather the material you need to complete the task, e.g. an example of the kind of document you often need to summarize or a schedule you regularly need to create. (Be sure to only include non-confidential documents.)

3. Explore (15 minutes)

Prompt the chatbot with an initial request to help complete your task. Be as specific as possible with your prompt, providing all essential details and information.

Review the output provided by AI. If you’re not getting the help you requested, provide more specificity or modify your request to better meet your needs.

4. Reflect and Share (5 minutes)
How’d it go? Did AI tackle the task? And how would you rate the results? Gather as a group to think and talk about what you learned from this exercise. Share surprises, aha moments and challenges, and how your learnings and realizations could help you in your own work.

MastersofAIDay_icon-07_tipsTips & Suggestions

  • Think about how to break down your task into simple steps. The simpler the better.
  • Once you've discovered the best way to prompt the chatbot for help with your dreaded task, save that prompt somewhere (e.g., a note taking app). Then, next time you need to do the same or similar task, use your prompt.
  • There are entire online communities dedicated to coming up with effective prompts for tasks. Try dipping into a few and seeing how they refine their prompts for achieving complex tasks.
