Activity: Writing Workshop
Introduction
Whether you’re working on a formal email or some witty copy, this AI editing session will help you bring the power of AI to your writing process. So grab your piece of writing, set some goals for improving it, and get ready for AI to help with revising and refining your writing.
For inspiration, check out this quick video on how Blavity founder and CEO Morgan DeBaun uses AI to help her with her writing.
What You'll Do
1. Get Started (5 minutes)
Ideate: To start, you’ll need a piece of writing. You can either:
- Grab a piece of (non-confidential) writing you already have — anything from a short email to a 1-2 page document.
- Quickly write something. Try a paragraph or two about your AI Day experience so far!
Choose: Decide if you would like to work as a group or individually to revise your writing with AI. If you work as a group, choose one or two pieces of writing to revise.
2. Plan (2-5 minutes)
What’s your revision goal? Do you need a grammar wiz, a text cutter, a clarity booster, or a tone (and voice) check to further engage your audience?
3. Explore (15 minutes)
Ditch your writing reins, and let AI take the lead! Hand over your writing by copying and pasting it into the chatbot input field, and prompt it with specific revision goals in mind.
Make this process iterative. Use the AI gems you are given to further improve and refine your writing.
Switch things up! Ask AI to rewrite your piece for a new audience or with a new tone.
Keep things fun! Challenge AI to make it rhyme, craft a Haiku, or write it like Lady Gaga's alter ego!
4. Reflect and Share (5 minutes)
Gather as a group to think and talk about what you learned from this exercise. Read your original piece of writing (or an excerpt) and the “revised by AI” version. Which do you like better? Why? Share surprises, aha moments, and challenges, and how your learnings and realizations could help you in your own work.Tips & Suggestions
- Create a separate working draft of your writing so you can pick and choose the revision suggestions that work best for you.
- Focus on revising and improving rather than rewriting your work.
- Think about your desired tone and audience as you prompt for revisions.
- Provide specific feedback or examples for reference.
- Be creative and persistent with your prompts to get the results you want and need.
